Pacific Dataviz Challenge: What is it?

The Pacific Dataviz Challenge is an international competition aimed at encouraging innovation and creativity in data visualisation in the Pacific region. Participants, whether individually or as a team, are invited to create data visualisations that highlight important issues or opportunities in the Pacific region. These visualisations can take various forms, such as interactive infographics, animations, dashboards, web applications, posters, PDF reports, drawings, etc.

For this third edition of the Challenge, the collaboration between the Pacific Community and the Government of New Caledonia gives you the opportunity to use Pacific data and compete for one of the eight prizes offered this year, with a total prize pool of $15,000 USD.

The theme of this year is: "GENDER (IN)EQUALITY".

One of the main slogans of the organizing team is 'No Limits' – regardless of your age, background, or skill level in data visualisation, everyone can participate! 

So, who will be among the winners of the 2024 edition?

Reward

This year, eight prizes will be awarded for a total of $15,000. Two special mentions have been created to encourage emerging talents from Pacific as well as youth participants. 
The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 12 July 2024. They will receive a wooden trophy created by a Pacific artist, as well as a cash prize based on their placement.

What is a "Dataviz"?

Data visualisation, or dataviz, is the art of representing complex information visually and comprehensibly. It transforms raw data into graphs, maps, charts, or other visual forms, enabling easier understanding of trends, patterns, and relationships within the data. During the COVID-19 crisis, dataviz played a crucial role in conveying vital information to the public, policymakers, and healthcare professionals. It provided clear and accessible insights into the spread of the virus, epidemiological trends, vaccination rates, and other critical factors, facilitating informed decision-making and guiding public health strategies.

The Pacific Data Hub is a central repository of data about the Pacific and from the Pacific. The platform serves as a gateway to the most comprehensive collection of data and information about the Pacific across key areas including population statistics, fisheries science, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction and resilience, public health surveillance, conservation of plant genetic resources for food security and human rights.

OpenData NC Logo

Data.gouv.nc is New Caledonia's open data platform. It enables New Caledonia's government and public sector authorities to publish datasets so as to promote transparency, accountability, and value creation and innovation.

Rules

  • Your data visualisation must use at least one dataset from the provided list of datasets.

  • Additional datasets can be used as long as they are accessible as open data.

  • Your data visualisation must be made public.

  • Anyone of any age can participate, regardless of their country of residence.

  • You are free to use any data visualisation tools of your choice.

  • Participation in the challenge is free of charge.

    FAQ

    Yes, you can participate as a team and as an individual, and apply to both categories, interactive and static. This means that if you're really motivated, you can submit one data visualisation individually and another one as a team for the interactive category. You can repeat the process with the static category and thus increase your chances of winning a prize through four entries.

    This challenge is open to everyone without restrictions. You simply need to submit your data visualisation before 30 June by filling out the form available on the website and using at least one of the datasets provided by the organisers.
    People of all ages can participate.

    Yes, absolutely! You will just need to include a written parental authorization when you register. If you are a minor and you win one of the numerous prizes of the challenge, the money will be transferred to the bank account of your legal guardian. To encourage young talents to participate in the challenge, we have created a special mention "Youth" of $1500 USD, reserved for those under 26 years old (as of the date of your application submission), so don't hesitate to give it a try!

    You must use at least one of the datasets provided by the organizers, whether it comes from the Pacific Data Hub (The open data platform of the Pacific Community) or from data.gouv.nc (The open data platform of the government of New Caledonia). 

    Additionally, you can also utilize one or more other datasets to perform cross-referencing and enrich your dataviz, provided that these datasets are available as open data.

    The challenge opens on Wednesday, 1 May 2024. You have two months to participate and submit your original creation before June 30th at 11:00 PM (GMT+11, New Caledonia time).

    The launch conference will take place on 7 May at 12:00 PM GMT+11 in the main conference hall of the Pacific Community and will be live-streamed on this link.

    We will also host a webinar on Wednesday, 22 May at 8:00 AM GMT+11 on 'The Power of Data Visualisation' with our five judges, who are recognised experts in the field of dataviz. You can already register using this link.

    Finally, the awards ceremony will be held on 12 July at 12:00 PM GMT+11 in the main conference hall of the Pacific Community and will be live-streamed on this link.

    Your dataviz must necessarily be in either English or French. Similarly, your registration form can be filled out, at your choice, in either English or French.

    There are no limitations: you can use any tools of your choice!
